Notes on waxing: We do not require you to trim hair before your appointment. We will wax you during menstruation just wear a cup or tampon. You must not swim, sauna, spa, workout or wear tight clothes for 24 hours after waxing.
Men's hair removal needs are unique and need special attention. Hair tends to be deeper-seated in the skin. It can be more painful to remove, requiring stronger waxes.
We will be careful, considerate waxing services designed to leave your skin smoother and save you time from shaving.
Your skin has a layer on it which we call the Acid Mantle. It's made up of skin cells, sebum (oil), sweat and a myriad of bacteria which naturally exist on all skins no matter how healthy they are.
When we wax, we rip this layer off. Sounds brutal, but it's the reality of waxing.
The problem is you NEED this layer to control the balance of bacteria. The Acid Mantle is your body's first line of defence against infection, it is part of the immune system. Skin does not like it being removed!
The second problem is your skin is inflamed from the trauma of ripping the hairs out.
Your body immediately goes to work to fix these problems.
It sends blood to deliver other immune cells.
This blood brings nutrition which increases the amount of new cells being made, and thickens the skin surface.
So when you grow new hairs in a few weeks, it's hard for them to push through that thicker surface, which is now cluttered with extra cells.
Many waxers incorrectly advise you to exfoliate to fix this. It is wrong.
What you should do is immediately after waxing apply a layer of lotion that mimics the Acid Mantle which we ripped away.
Apply it every 2 hours with clean hands or a tissue.
By doing this, the skin won't send as much blood flow, it won't thicken up and you'll get far less ingrown hairs.
More importantly you reduce the risk of a post-wax infection, because it helps re-establish the Acid Mantle quickly.
If you've never heard that before, it's probably because most skin clinics have stopped offering waxing due to it being unprofitable for them to provide. Most clinics left doing waxing are beauticians, with no training in skin function. We have chosen to continue waxing at an increased price, so you can access safe, professional waxing.
Please take our advice and use our recommended post-wax lotion. Your results will be better & you will not experience as many ingrown hairs.
Yes you should exfoliate lightly a week after waxing, but this is nowhere near as important as applying post-wax lotion in the first 24 hours after your wax.
Please also follow the below post-waxing rules for 24 hours, or until your skin feels completely normal again:
- Do not add heat to the skin. No hot water showers or lying in the sun
- Do not add UV to the skin. No solariums or sun bathing. Wear a dermal therapist-quality SPF30+ every day
- Do not immerse your body in water. No baths, saunas, swimming pools or ocean swimming. These are sources of bacteria & other things that can enter freshly-waxed skin
- Do not work out. The gym can wait 24 hours. Because the acid mantle is gone, skin is less acidic than it needs to be. If you sweat onto it, your extremely acidic sweat can actually burn you or cause cell damage.
- Do not engage in sexual intercourse if you had intimate area waxing. Friction can increase the thickening of skin & other people's body fluids can cause infections.
- use only the post-wax shower gel recommended by your dermal therapist. We sell this in our online store. It supports the acid mantle.
- Do not use intimate refresher wipes or feminine washes, douches or baby wipes. These will definitely disrupt the acid mantle, no matter what they say on the marketing. Nobody should use these things in their intimate areas at any time unless prescribed by a gynaecologist.
- Do not re-wax, shave over waxed areas or do any other type of hair removal or skin treatment
